Shan Liang

Shan’s special interest in jaw (TMJ), facial pain, and related conditions stems from being a sufferer of orofacial pain and jaw pain himself. He graduated from Monash University with an Honours Degree in Physiotherapy and has been a popular and valued clinical team member of Melbourne TMJ & Facial Pain Centre™ for a number of years. Shan’s passion for continuously honing his clinical skills for best patient outcomes has seen him attending many professional development courses with some of Melbourne’s leading experts in the management of TMD (Temporomandibular Disorders).

Additionally, Shan has completed multiple manual therapy courses, spinal rehab courses, and dry needling/acupuncture courses. To further his skills in managing patients with TMD and orofacial pain, Shan has also completed the Myofocus Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy course as well as more extensive training with the world-renowned Sarah Hornsby. As is the case with all Physiotherapists on our team, Shan is certified in the Goralsky Craniomandibular Method™ (GCMM) and has had extensive experience treating jaw, face, and ear-related conditions. He always tries to be up-to-date with the current research on TMD and orofacial pain by attending meetings and conferences such as the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain (AACP) International Virtual Symposium and Australian and New Zealand Academy of Orofacial Pain (ANZAOP) annual scientific meeting.

Shan completed his Masters in Orofacial Pain through the University of Sydney in 2023 and is now a titled pain physiotherapist with the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA).

Shan highly values the importance of paying attention to detail and he embodies our practice’s passion for addressing the causes – not just the symptoms – of these often poorly managed conditions. He is always focused on educating his patients to understand their condition and to provide them with strategies to be able to help themselves. As a bilingual, fluent Mandarin speaker, Shan is a favorite with our clients who have a preference for communicating in Mandarin.

Outside of Shan’s work passions, he is a keen exercise enthusiast and a budding photographer who likes Zen meditation.
